Goodwood visit

Goodwood 24 (6)Pupils from Chichester High had a fantastic day at Goodwood Home Farm organised by the Goodwood Education Trust and Leaf Education.

The purpose of the day was to help students understand food production and its sources, and to expose them to various careers in food and farming.

The event was especially beneficial for students studying GCSE Business and Food, as it provided valuable connections to their curriculum.

They had the opportunity to meet key individuals such as the Head Chef, Farm Manager, Goodwood Health Club, the manager of butchery, and several of Goodwood's main suppliers who contribute to putting food on our tables.

Our students observed different aspects of the working farm, which is one of the largest self-sustaining organic farms in the country. During the dairy tour, they gained insights into animal welfare, compared current and future milking methods, and explored the use of technology in dairy herd management.

Of course, they also got to spend time with the adorable calves!

Additionally, they learnt about sustainability, animal welfare, and health and nutrition in the environment.

The day concluded with a group task competition where students were challenged to either design a dish for a new online food box delivery company based on the day's information, or to brainstorm ideas on how Goodwood could diversify and generate more revenue.

Despite the majority of students being from Year 10, it was the Year 9s who excelled, with Ivor Hogg, Sophie Pratt, Lilly May Trimm and Caitlin Tucker all receiving commendation for their ideas.

Catherine Cannon, Goodwood Education Trust Manager said.

"The first ever #FarmMyFood event was held in West Sussex yesterday, in partnership with the #GoodwoodEducationTrust, The Goodwood Group organic Home Farm and LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming).

Almost 200 local secondary students and staff spent the day with us, meeting the suppliers and producers who put the food on our tables and learning about the career and training opportunities in agriculture and food.

We’re so grateful to all of the farm suppliers who gave their time to make the day such a success! As one said, 'If this inspires even just one person to think about the industry and where their food comes from, then it's worth it'.

Despite the relentless heat, they engaged students with curriculum-led activities, designed to create conversation, stimulate questions and discover opportunities in agriculture and food."
