Headteacher Update 21.06.24

Alaric Govan Headteacher at Chichester High School

21.06.24: ‘Life is too short not to celebrate nice moments.’- Jurgen Klopp

Today was Year 11 Leavers’ Day. The Year 11s all came in to have their shirts signed, collect their leavers’ books, hoodies and prom tickets, and to celebrate five years being together as a community.

When they left, the staff clapped and cheered them off the site in Chi High tradition.

Next week, it is their Year 11 prom at Fontwell racetrack, an event that I am sure will be amazing. Similarly, it was the last Year 13 exam today. Next week, the Year 13s have their Leavers’ Tea celebration and then the week after it is the Sixth Form Ball at Avisford Park Hotel. Time goes so quickly.

Goodbye Year 11

And as students leave the school after five or seven years, another group of students start preparing for life at Chichester High School. This week, we hosted our Small Schools’ Visits.

These are run for Year 6 students who are Small schools visit June24coming to the school either with a few other children from their primary school, or on their own. Starting at a large secondary school can be an anxious time for Year 6s, and more so when they are not joining with lots of other children that they already know. These visits help the children get to know the school and to make some friends before September. I was forwarded one particularly positive email from a new parent who said their child referred to Mr Ward (Head of Year 7) as ‘the smiley man’. Yes he is, and his positivity around the school is infectious.

This weekend, Mr Tidy and Miss Gault are taking around twenty students on a Duke of Edinburgh walk/ camp in the local area. The Duke of Edinburgh scheme is an excellent one, which I would recommend to everyone. It develops tenacity and resilience, as well as some really practical skills like cooking and using a compass to read a map.

As I’m writing this, I’ve just come from handing out prizes at a chess tournament that Mr Matthews (Teacher of Science) ran today. The chess club has an enthusiastic and growing membership; it runs after school every Tuesday. Teams from Midhurst Rother and Seaford College came to play against our own Chichester team. Well done to the students from all 3 schools who made up an amalgamated team to replace Bishop Luffa who were unable to attend because of staff illness. But an extra-special well done to the Chichester team who won by a comfortable margin. We have some very talented players in the school.

CHESS v Midhurst BL and Seaford 21.06 (11)This week, Mr McArthur (PE) took a group of cricketers to Hove Cricket ground to watch a T20 match. Again, this is an enthusiastic and dedicated club and I hope they enjoyed being able to watch this game. There was also a trip to Westgate for some of our ACE students to take part in a FORTIS session. If you don’t know what that is, you’re not alone - I had to google it this morning after Mr Boniface told me about it. FORTIS uses some very high-tech Speedflex machines to give all of the benefits of a HIIT workout without the aches and pains afterwards. It sounds great- I’ll have to ask my gym to introduce it.

Finally, don’t forget that our end-of-year Rewards Trips all take place on Monday 22nd July. The trips are:

Year 7 - activities at CHS
Year 8 - Chessington
Year 9 - Thorpe Park
Year 10 - Thorpe Park

I hope these give students an exciting end to what has been a busy but very rewarding year.

Have a great weekend and, on the theme of celebration, happy birthday to the eight children who are celebrating their birthdays over this long weekend. See you all back in school on Tuesday 25th June.
