Headteacher Update 03.05.24

Alaric Govan Headteacher at Chichester High SchoolWeek 30: Positive anything is better than negative nothing." – Elbert Hubbard

I’m sure most of you are looking forward to the Bank Holiday weekend. I’ve checked the weather forecast and, as seems to be the British tradition, it’s typically overcast with the likelihood of rain at the weekend. On the flipside, it gives Years 11 and 13 the perfect opportunity to focus on their revision! Yes, it’s that time again - final exams have already started in some subject areas and continue at a pace after the weekend. We are trying to support the students as best we can with continued intervention that is scheduled first thing in the morning. If you are a Year 11 parent, do talk to your child about this intervention and make sure they are in school on time to take advantage of this. And remember that there is free breakfast available to all students in the school canteen, an initiative that we started last term.

We have a small but dedicated gardening club that has been running for the past few weeks. Led by Mr Ward, this group of Year 7 students have been working hard twice a week as part of an intervention group to give these students some different experiences in school. A huge thank you to school staff for organising this, but also to the Chichester branch of Tesco who kindly donated £75 worth of gardening equipment. If there is anyone who can donate further equipment, it would be very gratefully received. Please contact Main Reception if you can help.

Another feature of life at Chichester High School of which we are incredibly proud is our TKAT ACE programme. TKAT ACE is one of the core TKAT strategies - a commitment to provide all Pupil Premium students with access to a tutor who can support them throughout their time at the school. This provision is very different to what most schools offer - I had worked for 26 years in Hampshire schools before coming to Chichester and I was amazed by the kindness, care and support that our TKAT ACE tutors offer every day. This week, the team ran a parent drop-in which was hugely successful and a reminder that education is about more than just academic qualifications. For more information, please visit the link here

It is only a couple of months until we begin welcoming the new cohort of Year 7 students with a series of transition events. Mr Ward (his second mention this week) was out at Jessie Younghusband school meeting Year 6 students who are nervous, excited and every other possible emotion about coming to our school in September. There is also a Technology Club run each week which gives Year 6 students a taste of what life will be like at secondary school. Thank you to all of the staff who make these events possible. see the post here

This week, we launched work experience for Year 10. I don’t think we have run this for about 5 years and it’s something I feel very passionately about. Miss Taylor led an assembly on this and the reception from the year group has been very positive- she was telling me this morning that lots of students have already signed up on the website and some have even organised their placements. I can’t wait to hear about their experiences.

Last week, Mr Branley-Jones organised the Junior Maths Challenge, attended by 56 of our students. This is an incredible turnout and shows that you can always count on the Maths department (excuse the awful pun – it has been a long week).

Finally, the Year 8 girls’ football team recently won the Sharpie Cup, a tournament involving all of the West Sussex schools. Well done to everyone involved - a fantastic result.

Have a great long weekend, and extra good luck to all those involved in examinations. You’ve worked really hard - just a few more weeks to go. Let’s keep that motivation going.
